Light Therapy consists of exposure to specific
ranges of light wavelengths. There are several types of treatments available.
Low-level lasers penetrate deeply into the skin and work by restoring abnormal
cellular function. Benefits include improved metabolism, circulation and tissue
healing. Other treatment variations consist of very bright, full-spectrum light
or “light boxes” that use very intense artificial illumination for a prescribed
amount of time. Full sunlight or light boxes are preferred for seasonal affective
disorder (SAD).
Other treatments are based upon infrared light exposure. Light
therapy is useful for treating skin conditions such as psoriasis and skin rejuvenation.
