Can Drinking Sodium Bicarbonate Help Autoimmune Disease?

By Dr. Henry Sobo

A new study from the Medical College of Georgia, published in the Journal of Immunology showed that when the study subjects drank a daily diose of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) it created an anti inflammatory response which may benefit those with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Drinking baking soda appeared to promote the production of a  chemical messenger called acetylcholine, which acts to create an anti inflammatory response by important immune related cells called macrophages.

Sodium bicarbonate is already used to slow the progression of kidney disease. Researcher Paul O’Conner explains, “We started thinking, how does baking soda slow progression of kidney disease?”  Sodium bicarbonate promotes alkalinity which is the opposite of acidity, and that seems to be the key to reducing the bodies inflammatory response which underlies the development of many diseases. One of the many functions of the kidneys is managing the acid- base chemistry of the body. With kidney disease, there is impaired kidney function and one of the resulting problems can be that the blood becomes too acidic. Significant consequences can include increased risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Dr. O’Conner says, ” The shift from inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory profile is happening everywhere. “We saw it in the kidneys, we saw it in the spleen, now we see it in the peripheral blood.” It appears that the shift from a pro-inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory response by the body is the key to combating disease.

Berries of all types decrease the risk of dementia and the risk of Alzheimer’s

Recent studies have found that fruit in general, and especially berries of all types- decrease the risk of dementia and the risk of Alzheimer’s.

Fruit should always be eaten first thing in the morning or before other meals, because it digests faster than other foods.  If you eat fruits with or after processed foods, it can cause gas or fermentation in your intestines.
