Magnesium needed when taking Vitamin D supplements

By Dr. Henry Sobo

An important research finding has emerged for the many Americans now taking vitamin D supplements. Don’t forget magnesium.

An article just published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association finds that Vitamin D can’t be metabolized without sufficient magnesium levels. The study’s co-author M.S. Razzaque, PhD, a professor at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine says, “People are taking Vitamin D supplements but don’t realize how it gets metabolized. Without magnesium, Vitamin D is not really useful or safe.” He explains that consumption of Vitamin D supplements can increase a person’s calcium and phosphate levels which may contribute to vascular problems if they are magnesium deficient while taking Vitamin D supplements.

Magnesium is one of the body’s most abundant and important minerals. It reduces osteoporosis, and lowers the risk of bone fracture that goes along with Vitamin D deficiency. A deficiency of either vitamin D or magnesium is associated with a number of health problems including increased risk fracture, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndrome. Dr Razzaque says, “By consuming an optimal amount of magnesium, one may be able to lower the risks of Vitamin D deficiency, and reduce the dependency on Vitamin D supplements.”

Foods high in magnesium include bananas, beans, broccoli, nuts, egg yolk, fish oil, green vegetables, milk, oatmeal, whole grains and seeds.
